Dojo Rules

1. Bow on entering and leaving the dojo.

2. Remove shoes before entering the dojo.(where applicable)

3. Address all instructors as "Sensei".

4. "OSS" is a sign of respect and is used generally in karate, particularly in the following situations:-

a) Upon receiving any advice from the instructor the student must reply by answering "OSS".

b) When bowing at the start and finish of the class.

c) When bowing to your partner during Kumite.

d) In any other appropriate situations, for example during Gradings or competition.

5. The minimum times between gradings are as follows:-

Note* All of the following require a minimum training time of twice per week.
Members must obtain permission from their instructor before taking their black belt examination


a) Novices - 9th Kyu - 2 Months.
b) All other Kyu Grades - 3 Months.
c) 1st Kyu - 1st Dan - 6 Months.
d) 1st Dan - 2nd Dan - 2 Years.
e) 2nd Dan - 3rd Dan - 3 Years.
6. No-one may leave the class without first obtaining permission from the instructor.

7. Any member arriving late must take up a kneeling position at the front of the dojo and await permission from the instructor before joining the class. On receiving permission, bow and then join the class.

8. Finger and toe nails must be kept short and clean.

9. Gis must be kept clean and in good condition.

10. Jewellery (rings, bracelets, neck chains etc.) must not be worn during training, and tape should be tied round rings which cannot be removed.

12. Members must apply for a karate licence from the Karate Union of Great Britain after being accepted by the dojo.

13. Any member who for any reason stops training for one month or longer without first contacting the instructor may need to reapply for membership in the usual way if wishing to rejoin the dojo.

14. Members must not use their skills in any offensive way outside the dojo.
